Data responsibility

Last updated:

Assessment and monitoring activities often involve the collection and use of sensitive data. It is crucial to design these exercises in a way that ensures responsible data management, that should be safe, ethical, and effective.

Data responsibility helps to ensure that the design is guided by UNHCR’s overarching commitment to Do No Harm and to the centrality of protection. It aims to ensure that the rights, dignity and well-being of forcibly displaced and stateless persons are the key design consideration, including what data we collect, why we collect it, how we analyse and present it, and how it should be shared and used.

For comprehensive guidance on data responsibility principles, please refer to the UN Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) Operational Guidance on Data Responsibility in Humanitarian Action.
