Sampling for household surveys

Last updated:

This technical note covers household surveys with a focus on probability sampling, bias, and survey weights. It explains how households are selected in a representative way from a population for a survey.

The note covers key concepts in household methodology using examples. It provides concrete actions colleagues can take to make UNHCR household surveys more representative and promotes a view of household surveys as a collaborative process between different data and non-data functions in the organization.

This note was adapted from the UNHCR Data Academy course Introduction to Household Survey Methodology (internal). UNHCR colleagues can access additional data academy courses via the UNHCR Data Community Hub.
