The programme is aimed at trying to tackle Afghanistan’s high maternal and child mortality rate among the highest in the world. The students are from remote rural villages, far from existing health facilities, and are committed to returning as trained midwives to support their communities. The programme is an important opportunity for young women to continue their studies. The de facto authorities in Afghanistan have barred women and girls from high school and universities, but the healthcare sector is exempted from these restrictions.UNHCR has secured funding to continue with another two year midwifery pro Midwifery training programme in Central Highlands Region, Bamyan Province Afghanistan.](/kr/sites/kr/files/RF1308049.jpg)
