UNHCR comment on media reporting on 28 November 2024 decision of the United Kingdom’s (UK) Upper Tribunal Immigration and Asylum Chamber
This comment is in response to media coverage referencing UNHCR in relation to the 28 November 2024 decision of the United Kingdom’s (UK) Upper Tribunal Immigration and Asylum Chamber (Case No: UI-2023-003436 & UI-2023-003438)
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, wishes to clarify that the organization was not party to the Tribunal proceedings in this case, nor have we advocated for nor represented the individual involved. At the request of the Home Office, UNHCR in March 2018 provided comments on the principles and standards related to the interpretation and application of international refugee law relevant to the issues raised in this case. Since that time, UNHCR has had no further involvement in this case. UNHCR does not determine who is and who is not granted asylum in the UK – this is the responsibility of the UK authorities.
