UNHCR condemns bomb attack in Pakistan's Jalozai camp hosting internally displaced people
UNHCR is appalled by the bomb attack that took place yesterday (Thursday) in a camp for internally displaced people in northern Pakistan. The attack was in the Jalozai camp near Peshawar in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Ten people are known to have been killed, and several dozen others are left wounded. The dead are residents of the camp and an aid worker from a local non-governmental organization.
Jalozai is Pakistan's largest camp hosting around 12,500 displaced families, around 57,000 people.
We join the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Pakistan in expressing our deep condolences and sympathy with the families of all those who lost their lives or were injured in the attack. UNHCR urges Pakistan to further improve security arrangements around the camp and make sure that internally displaced people and humanitarian workers are safe and not targeted. We are also urging on all sides to respect civilian lives and the sanctity of humanitarian work.
As of today all humanitarian services at Jalozai camp have been suspended while UN agencies assess the security situation. UNHCR, with other humanitarian agencies, remains committed to continue assisting uprooted people in Pakistan.
