European Union continues to support vulnerable refugees in Türkiye with a new contribution

27 September 2023 Also available in:

UNHCR welcomes a new contribution from the EU to support vulnerable refugees and ensure their access to protection and assistance in Türkiye.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has welcomed a new contribution of USD 6.4 million (EUR 6 million) from the European Union (EU) through its Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Department for the refugee response in Türkiye.

Since 2014, Türkiye has been hosting the largest number of refugees worldwide, with around 3.7 million Syrians under temporary protection, and international protection status holders and applicants of other nationalities. With the new EU contribution, UNHCR will continue to support national policies aiming at enhanced access to registration, protection delivery and reliable and updated information-provision.

More specifically, the EU’s contribution will enhance the registration efforts of Türkiye’s Presidency of Migration Management (PMM) and its Provincial Directorates of Migration Management (PDMMs); the identification and referral of people with specific needs; and outreach to communities. Given the high demand on registration processes, supporting the capacity of PDMMs will increase the efficiency of registration processes and help address the needs of the most vulnerable refugees at the earliest stage. The funding will also support the promotion of international protection principles, inclusive consultations, and thematic dialogues across a wide range of stakeholders.

While the deadly earthquakes that struck Türkiye in February 2023 caused interruptions to services in many areas and increased the protection needs of both refugees and host communities members, UNHCR continues to support affected populations and enable people in need of international protection and host community members to benefit from coordinated support from a wide range of actors.

The EU is a long-standing partner of UNHCR’s work in Türkiye. The latest contribution brings the total EU humanitarian funding for UNHCR’s activities in Türkiye to over USD 32 million (over EUR 30 million) in the past two years.
