The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, concluded a two-day visit to Türkiye on Friday, during which he met with newly appointed government officials following the general elections in May.
During the visit, Grandi met with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya as well as Atilla Toros new President of Migration Management Presidency.
In addition to discussing the ongoing cooperation between UNHCR and the Government of Türkiye, Grandi took the opportunity to express his appreciation for Türkiye's remarkable contributions to the refugee response and its inclusive humanitarian policy for people in need of international protection for more than 12 years.
"Türkiye's inclusive policy was also reflected in the country's immediate response in the aftermath of the devastating earthquakes in February," Grandi said. "I witnessed personally during my last visit in March how the humanitarian community and the Turkish authorities provided assistance for all in need, irrespective of citizenship or status." He also stressed the need for predictable, multi-year support from global and regional financial institutions, donor states, and the private sector to assist refugee-hosting countries like Türkiye. "We cannot expect overstretched countries with limited resources to shoulder this task alone," he emphasized.
UNHCR expresses its appreciation for the very close cooperation and communication with Türkiye, including the successful realization of the first Global Refugee Forum and the recent handover to the new co-conveners of the Forum at the end of 2023, which will mark another milestone in building international solidarity with the world's refugees and the countries and communities that host them.
