After taking office, High Commissioner Filippo Grandi paid his first field visit to Turkey on 15-16 January 2016 as the country hosting the largest number of refugees in the world. The primary focus of the mission was to continue to express appreciation for Turkey’s role in receiving and protecting millions of refugees; to reaffirm UNHCR’s support of Turkish efforts; to visit the operation and to meet with refugee families. The High Commissioner was accompanied throughout the mission by the MENA Director Amin Awad, his Representative in Turkey Pascale Moreau and his Spokesperson Melissa Fleming.
In the course of his visit, High Commissioner Grandi visited Nizip refugee camps in Gaziantep; held talks with high-level Turkish authorities including the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and visited a UNHCR-supported community centre in İstanbul speaking to urban asylum seekers and refugees.
