Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) has provided support to over 72,000 vulnerable Syrian refugees in Jordan and Lebanon through UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency’s multi-purpose cash assistance programme (MPCA) over a four-month period, worth US$ 4 million.
From February to May 2024, this assistance helped more than 58,700 Syrian refugees in Lebanon and nearly 14,000 in Jordan to meet their most urgent needs, including food, rent, and healthcare services.
“This contribution came at a crucial time, particularly as humanitarian needs continue to grow, and refugees further struggle to stay afloat,” stated Ahmed Mohsen, UNHCR Representative to the State of Qatar. “We are thankful for QFFD’s continuous support to refugees and their contribution to our programmes, providing critical assistance to those who need it most.”
On his part, Sultan bin Ahmed Al Aseeri, Acting Director General at QFFD, emphasised the importance of continued support and collaboration with UNHCR and stated: “QFFD is committed to addressing the urgent needs of Syrian refugees and their host communities. Our partnership with UNHCR is a testament to our shared responsibility with the international community.” He added: “With this contribution, we aim to lend a helping hand to those impacted by the prolonged crisis and assist them in meeting their immediate needs.”
The multi-purpose cash assistance programme has been a cornerstone of UNHCR’s response to the Syrian refugee crisis, offering beneficiaries the dignity of choice to prioritise their own needs while also contributing to local economies.
After more than 13 years of crisis in Syria, the humanitarian needs of Syrian refugees in neighbouring countries are at their highest levels ever. Lebanon remains one of the countries hosting the largest number of refugees per capita in the world, with a government estimate of 1.5 million Syrian refugees. Jordan continues to host some 625,000 Syrian and about 69,000 refugees of other nationalities registered with UNHCR. Both countries are facing growing financial challenges and limited resources, which deeply affects refugees and host communities.
The State of Qatar is a key UNHCR partner in the region and beyond, supporting UNHCR’s operations across the world. QFFD’s contributions to UNHCR’s programmes since 2018 have reached nearly US$ 103 million, benefiting some 2 million refugees in Bangladesh, Jordan, Lebanon and South Sudan, as well as internally displaced people in Afghanistan, Iraq and Yemen.
