World Refugee Day 2007 National Activities: Romania
On 19 June, football matches were held at the Dinamo Sport Club between refugees and a team gathering players picked from various sections of the Ministry of Interior and Administration. Retired Olympic rowing champion Elisabeta Lipa helped hand out prizes.
From 19-23 June, a display of products made by refugee children and women were displayed in the Bucharest Mall. The inspiration for the products came from Cameroon, Iran, Iraq and Senegal. Some 1,000 people visited the bazaar.
A "Romanian Traditions" folk concert was performed by the Ciocarlia Ensemble on 20 June at the Cultural Centre of the Ministry of Interior and Administration Reform. The event was followed by a reception. Approximately 400 diplomats and government officials and members of the local business community.
UNHCR organized a multicultural evening on 21 June at "Cafeneaua Actorilor" Terrace in cooperation with Save the Children Romania and the Romanian Forum for Refugees and Migrants. Refugee children and teenagers performed traditional and modern dances. The Romanian band Simplu and the refugee band Gloria performed for the refugees in Romania.
In June, 900 posters and 2,600 cards publicising WRD activities were distributed throughout Bucharest. Three cars bearing WRD banners were driven around the city.
