World Refugee Day 2004 National Activity Plan: Benin

World Refugee Day 2004 National Activity Plan: Benin

20 June 2004

Kids play in a neighbourhood populated mostly by Iraqi refugees. Because refugees are not allowed to work in Syria, children often must take informal jobs to help support their families.

On 17 June, an awareness session on health will be held in Cotonou with the theme, "Keeping you in good health gives you the chance to go home". The following day, UNHCR and NGOs Racines and Caritas will organise an awareness performance on HIV/AIDS. The performance will be followed by a HIV/AIDS testing session in Kpomassè refugee camp.

From 18-19 June, there will be an exhibition and sale of products made by refugees, and sports competitions in Kpomassè refugee camp. The Minister of Interior will give a speech about World Refugee Day, and a TV programme on durable solutions will be broadcast live by the national TV channel. A reception will be organised by both the government and UNHCR.

The World Refugee Day spot will be broadcast from 6-20 June. The High Commissioner's message on World Refugee Day will also be aired on 20 June.
