World Refugee Day 2003 National Activity Plan: United Kingdom

UNHCR and the National Refugee Integration Forum are organising Include Me!, a conference to help develop social inclusion strategies for unaccompanied children.

For Refugee Week (June 16-22), UNHCR and its national association, UK for UNHCR, are working with NGO partners to celebrate refugees' positive contribution in the UK and to promote tolerance through arts, cultural and educational events. UNHCR will provide NGOs, community groups and schools with advice and resources. The refugee agency's staff will also be giving talks at schools and colleges. On June 15, UNHCR and UK for UNHCR will launch Refugee Week through Celebrating Sanctuary, a free afternoon festival of music, dance and visual arts by refugee artists from around the world. Information about the agency will be on display, including a UNHCR tent, and staff will be on hand to answer questions.

UK for UNHCR, in co-operation with Refugee Action, will host Dance for Change, a series of club nights in London and Manchester on June 15 & 18 that features top DJs and a wide range of music. This marks the start of a co-operative campaign to raise awareness of refugee issues among young people in Britain. To find out more, visit the website - www.danceforchange.org.

UNHCR will be answering questions on BBC Schools' online message board for the duration of Refugee Week, giving students aged 8-14 the opportunity to pose questions on refugees to an expert. Ahead of the week, students can also submit reports on refugee issues and the best will be featured on the site. And on World Refugee Day, students can chat live with an asylum seeker from Liberia, now living in Wales, to find out more about the experience of exile. Volunteers will provide information and recruit regular donors at the UNHCR/UK for UNHCR stall at the Glastonbury Festival from June 24-30. Glastonbury is the UK's biggest festival, with an expected attendance of 150,000 and headline acts including REM, Radiohead, Moby, Fatboy Slim and Beth Orton.

UK for UNHCR will hold a Twilight Barbecue at the Roof Gardens in Kensington on June 24. Tickets for this glamorous event are selling fast and funds raised will go towards refugee projects.

UNHCR's "Caught in Conflict" photo exhibition on Refugee Women, by award-winning British photographer Jenny Matthews, will be touring the south-west of England with the British Red Cross from mid-June.
