World Refugee Day 2002: Pakistan
Refugee children participated in a painting competition in Islamabad on 20 June. Refugee women who are trained in beautician skills competed at the Community Centre.
On 24 June, the World Refugee Day event in Islamabad started with a peace walk by refugees, followed by speeches and a video show. The programme ended with music played by Iranian and Pakistani artists. On display were handicrafts and paintings by refugees, including unusual techniques of flower making.
In Peshawar, the main celebration took place on 20 and 21 June at Shiraz Gathering. In the opening ceremony, speeches were made by UNHCR, a refugee woman (PDF: 86k/1p), and the Federal Minister for Women, Development and Social Work (PDF: 46k/1p). Refugee children played a short drama on the work of UNHCR. Various organisations set up stalls to display arts and crafts made by refugee women. The two-day event ended with a speech by the Commissioner for Afghan Refugees (48K/1p) and traditional musical performances by refugees.
