From the eruption of conflicts and warfare forcing millions of people to flee their homeland, to natural disasters which abruptly render hundreds of thousands homeless, UNHCR has always been adhering to the “72 hours” principle, insisting on launching emergency operation within 72 hours after the outbreak of wars and natural disasters to ensure refugees and displaced persons can receive life support as soon as possible. How does UNHCR respond to the eruption of humanitarian crisis?

Armed conflicts, civil wars and natural disasters have been escalating in recent years, making it highly possible for humanitarian crisis to break out abruptly. For the sake of maintaining our capacity for emergencies, UNHCR has established The Preparedness Package for Refugee Emergencies for governments, NGOs, UN agencies, and other relevant partners to equip our teams with full preparedness amidst humanitarian crisis. The Package sets standards for refugee emergencies preparation in three aspects:



In order to provide refugees with immediate support within 72 hours after the outbreak, UNHCR takes a series of actions to deliver relief items to refugees as soon as possible.

When gunfire or natural disaster erupts, refugees do not have time to pack their personal belongings when they flee. They are in desperate need of your help to survive.

Milana is a 6-year-old child forced to flee from her home in Ukraine. During their woke to the sound of shelling, Milana’s mother fled to western Ukraine with her and her seven-month-old sister for safety. Having lost their home just within a night, Milana and family can only accommodate in a local university dormitory. 



With just $156 monthly, you can provide materials to 4 displaced families to put up sturdy homes.

Abraht is a young mother from Ethiopia. Since the armed conflicts broke out in November 2020, Abraht, who was already two months pregnant of her first child, had no choice but to flee home. Although she managed to deliver her child safely, she could only eat bread and drink water from rivers during the flee.


With just $315 monthly, you can provide clean drinking water to 2 families of 4 for a month to ensure the health of refugees. 

As a mother of seven in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Esperance did not only witness the eruption of Nyiragongo volcano, but also lost everything in the volcanic eruption. Her homes and lands crumbled into dust within a single night. Having nothing with her, Esperance and her family can only stay at school now, yet without adequate food to eat and beds to sleep.

With just $600 monthly, you can support 11 refugee families with multipurpose cash assistance to help them meet essential needs for one month.
