The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Mr Filippo Grandi, arrived to Egypt on an official two-day visit from 12 – 14 January to discuss the refugee situation in Egypt and touch on a number of regional and global issues in light of Egypt’s role as the chair of the African Union.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Mr Filippo Grandi, arrived to the Arab Republic of Egypt on an official two-day visit from 12 – 14 January to discuss the refugee situation in Egypt and touch on a number of regional and global issues in light of Egypt’s role as the chair of the African Union.
During his visit, Mr Grandi will meet with the President of Egypt, the Secretary General of the League of Arab States, and several other ministers, as well as refugees and asylum-seekers of different nationalities.
Egypt has been a lead example in the region in hosting refugees in an urban setting and providing services in the health and education sectors on equal footing as Egyptians. As of 31 November 2018, Egypt hosted more than 242,000 registered refugees and asylum-seekers of 58 different nationalities mainly concentrated in Greater Cairo, Alexandria and the North Coast.
UNHCR has been operating in Egypt since 1954. The year 2019 marks 65 years of UNHCR presence in Egypt, making it one of the oldest operations in the world.
