World Refugee Day 2003: Kazakhstan
From June 16-27, an exhibition of photos and posters titled "Refugees in Kazakhstan" took place at the UN Outreach Centre in Almaty.
On June 19, a sports competition for some 60 refugee teenagers was held at a school in Almaty. The event was covered in the evening news of the national TV channel, "Southern Capital".
Between June 19 and 21, UNHCR's World Refugee Day spot was shown several times a day on the huge screen at the New City Square in Almaty.
On June 20, after a ceremony, refugee children in Almaty enjoyed a half-day of rollercoasters and watched a show by the Art Studio at the Family Park, which offered UNHCR a 50-percent discount for the occasion. Coca-Cola Bottlers provided 600 bottles of Coke free of charge. There was also a concert organised by refugees.
Twenty refugee children who won contests organised by UNHCR and its partner organisations will participate in a summer camp, "Tau Samal", in August.
