Montenegro: FRY election nervousness

Briefing notes

Montenegro: FRY election nervousness

26 September 2000

Over the past few days, up to 800 people, predominantly Muslim Slavs from the Sandjak area and ethnic Albanians from the Ulcinj and Berane areas, have left Montenegro for neighbouring Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The people, who are staying with friends and relatives, have not asked UNHCR for help. The small-scale movement appears to be of a precautionary nature. It stems from some nervousness in Montenegro surrounding the Yugoslav presidential election.
