European parliament's "highest refugee protection standards" resolution
UNHCR welcomes the European Parliament's resolution marking the agency's 50th anniversary, in which the European Union's legislature reaffirmed its support for UNHCR's work on behalf of refugees and other uprooted persons. The resolution - adopted unanimously in Strasbourg on Thursday - urges the European Commission and member states to base future European Union asylum instruments on the "highest refugee protection standards."
UNHCR welcomes the resolution's call for the European Union to provide political and financial support to the UN refugee agency and to ensure predictability, flexibility and geographic balance of EU funding for UNHCR. We also welcome the resolution's call for states to urgently take "all measures" to safeguard the physical security and property of UNHCR staff.
