CLIFDEW-GRID
CLIFDEW-GRID
CLIFDEW-GRID is an early warning grid-based modelling system designed to predict potential climate-induced forced displacement. It is a joint innovative data project led by UNHCR and the University of California Irvine and financed by the Complex Risk Analytics Fund (CRAF'd).
CLIFDEW-GRID will be the first risk index of its kind. Unlike conventional approaches, the project provides sub-national predictive modelling, focusing on the intricate dynamics of slow-onset climate hazards at a local level, such as drought, sea-level rise and other weather-related disasters. It will combine UNHCR's registration data, remote sensing insights and organic data sources to create a predictive model that anticipates displacement risks and provides a nuanced understanding of vulnerability factors.
The innovative risk index will support partners and governments with advanced data analytics to better anticipate and respond precisely and effectively to climate-induced displacement within countries.
The project will support UNHCR's digital transformation strategy, which seeks to optimize the delivery of protection programmes through innovative digital approaches.
It will initially be piloted in countries in Western and Eastern Africa.
