UNHCR comment on tweet by Special Envoy for the Western & Central Mediterranean situation

The following is UNHCR’s response to inquiries on a tweet recently issued by its Special Envoy for the Western & Central Mediterranean situation, Vincent Cochetel.

UNHCR extends its deepest condolences to all those affected by the recent shipwrecks. We stand in solidarity with all the victims and those who lost their children in these awful tragedies, as we have always done.

We apologize for the comments made yesterday by our Special Envoy for the Western & Central Mediterranean situation. They do not reflect UNHCR’s position in any way possible and we do not support the prosecution of family members who have lost their loved ones. The Special Envoy has also apologized for his tweet.
