UNHCR chief calls for 'compassionate action' this Ramadan

GENEVA – The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, shared his warmest wishes for all observing the holy month of Ramadan, which begins today, urging action on behalf of millions of forcibly displaced people worldwide.

“Through our reflection, we come to recognize that while words may reassure, it is only through action that we can truly see tangible change,” he said.

“We continue to live in extremely complex times where violence is multiplied, conflicts are protracted and tens of millions of people are forcibly uprooted or on the move. This has created unprecedented levels of human suffering and desperation.

“Together, we are powerful beyond measure.”

“Millions of people like you and I are living in a constant state of conflict, insecurity and persecution. Their loved ones torn from them under inexplicable circumstances. Think of civilians in Syria or Yemen. Think of the plight of the Rohingyas in Myanmar, Bangladesh and the other countries to which they have fled.”

Grandi said that action can come in various forms, including showing charity towards our fellow humans; a kind gesture to reaffirm a person’s dignity, and advocacy to give a voice for those in situations beyond their control.

For those uprooted from their homes, he said, “hope remains a catalyst for survival … pushing them to achieve and contribute to their futures and that of their communities. Their resilience inspires us and reminds us that all contributions, big or small, can have an impact.”

“To those who continue to show compassion and empathy and embody the true values of humanity: I am moved by your solidarity, generosity and hospitality,” he said. “Together, we are powerful beyond measure.”
