Denmark

In 2020, Denmark reported 1,515 registered asylum-seekers – the lowest number in 20 years – most of them coming from Syria, Eritrea and Morocco.

UNHCR is represented in Denmark with a liaison office located in UN City in Copenhagen. The office is part of UNHCR’s Representation for the Nordic and Baltic Countries, which has been active in the region since 1985 and is responsible for Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden.

The UN Refugee Agency’s work in the Nordic and Baltic countries focuses on supporting governments in implementing legal instruments related to asylum and statelessness and ensuring that all persons of concern to UNHCR in the region enjoy access to their rights in these areas. UNHCR also focuses on raising awareness and mobilizing support for the organization’s global efforts to protect people forced to flee.

In UN City in Copenhagen, Denmark also hosts UNHCR’s Global Service Center with several Headquarter-functions, including UNHCR’s Private Sector Partnerships Service, Education Section, Global Data Service, Division of Information systems and Telecommunication as well as the joint UNHCR-World Bank Data Center.
