On 20 June, the global community is observing World Refugee Day, an international day designated by the United Nations to honor the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their homes to escape conflict or persecution.
This year, the World Refugee Day campaign focuses on the greater inclusion of refugees, because only together we can achieve great results. The shared experience of COVID-19 has shown us that we only succeed if we stand together. Together we heal, learn and shine.
Ukraine is home to over 700,000 internally displaced persons and 5,000 refugees and asylum seekers; in addition, UNHCR estimates there are up to 35,000 stateless persons residing in Ukraine. Since 2014, the country has experienced a forced displacement crisis. UNHCR Ukraine recently prepared a publication, reflecting on its engagement in addressing forced displacement in Ukraine over the last 25 years.
We invite you to join the observance in your city and show solidarity with forcibly displaced and stateless people in Ukraine. Like anyone, they deserve protection and dignity in their lives despite tragic circumstances.
