Turkmenistan
In October 2024, Turkmenistan became the second country in the world to resolve all its known cases of statelessness. Turkmenistan is the only country in Central Asia that is party to both Statelessness Conventions, and it is also a member of the Global Alliance to End Statelessness.
As of mid-2024, Turkmenistan hosted 13 refugees recognized by UNHCR according to its mandate. There are no reports of asylum-seekers arriving in Turkmenistan since it introduced a national asylum system in 2005.
UNHCR interventions in Turkmenistan are carried out by civil society partners, with oversight, funding, and strategic directions provided by the UNHCR Representation to Central Asia, based in Almaty.
