UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has signed an agreement with Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) worth US$2 million to provide critical assistance in South Sudan to 240,000 people who fled to the country as a result of the conflict in Sudan.
The agreement was signed by Ahmed Mohsen, UNHCR Representative to the State of Qatar, and Sultan bin Ahmed Al-Aseeri, QFFD Acting Director-General.
This contribution will support UNHCR’s emergency response in South Sudan from September to November 2024, by providing life-saving assistance by distributing 4,000 core relief item kits, including blankets, sleeping mats, soap and sanitary pads, as well as non-food items consisting of plastic sheets, jerry cans, buckets, and mosquito nets. In addition, the funding will provide thousands of people with essential medicines as well as helping them access basic health services.
Ahmed Mohsen welcomed the agreement and remarked: “QFFD’s support is crucial in ensuring that we can respond effectively to the urgent needs of those fleeing the crisis in Sudan. This timely and generous contribution will provide much needed relief to thousands of vulnerable individuals, as needs continue to grow.” He added: “We deeply appreciate Qatar’s steadfast support to help the most vulnerable forcibly displaced people around the world, and we are proud of our humanitarian partnership which allows us to extend a helping hand and hope to those who have been severely affected by conflicts.”
On his part, Sultan Ahmed Al-Aseeri said: “QFFD is proud to partner with UNHCR and contribute to these vital activities in support of people who were forced to flee due to the ongoing fighting in Sudan and to alleviate their suffering.”
South Sudan hosts some 489,000 refugees and asylum-seekers, mainly from Sudan, and has over 2 million internally displaced people due to conflict, insecurity, and the impact of climate change. As of 31 August 2024, 44% of UNHCR’s 2024 financial requirements in the country have been funded. There is an urgent need for additional support to provide the most vulnerable displaced people with water, food, shelter, healthcare, and other necessities.
Qatar’s longstanding support to UNHCR has been instrumental in addressing humanitarian crises worldwide. Since 2018, QFFD has contributed nearly US$ 103 million (close to QAR 375.6 billion) to various UNHCR programmes around the world.
