About Pedro
Pedro Bial is a journalist, writer, filmmaker, poet, and TV presenter. As a journalist, he worked as an international correspondent between 1988 and 1996 and covered humanitarian crises, such as the Gulf and Yugoslav wars. Bial understands the refugee issue personally – his parents are refugees who escaped World War II. Throughout his career, he has always been committed to raising awareness to forced displacement and his recognition within journalism makes him a powerful advocate for refugee issues.
Bial started supporting UNHCR in 2019. He has helped shed light on the Venezuela Crisis through his TV program "Conversa com Bial" with interviews and short movies produced after a visit to the UNHCR operation. He was one of the speakers at an event organized by UNHCR on Worl Refugee Day 2019 to launch the book "Sea Prayer", written by GWA Khaled Hosseini and translated to Portuguese by Bial.
In December 2020, Pedro Bial recorded the voiceover of a video that marked UNHCR's 70th anniversary. In April 2021, UNHCR Brazil launched a DRTV movie with Bial's participation. The film presented the story of Anna, a refugee child who lost her parents to escape armed conflicts. This DRTV movie was the best creative on display (Verizon, Quantcast) and Video (YouTube).
In June 2021, to sensitize potential private donors about the refugee cause, Bial participated in a virtual event called "The power of inclusion: an exclusive conversation with Khaled Hosseini & Pedro Bial". Around 30 high-level individuals attended the one-hour event moderated by Maria Beatriz Nogueira, Head of Field Office São Paulo. "The meeting got me emotional and aroused deep reflections", said one of the UNHCR donors. The event was featured in O Globo Newspaper, showing the transversality potential of communication and fundraising initiatives. In April 2022, Bial recorded a DRTV film's voiceover in response to the Ukraine emergency.
