Ad Hoc Committee on Statelessness and Related Problems, Conflicts of Law in the Field of the Nationality of Married Women (Memorandum by the Secretary-General)
E/AC.32/3
1. In the preamble to its resolution 248 (IX) B by which the Economic and Social Council decided to appoint this Ad Hoc Committee, reference was also made to the resolution on the nationality of married women adopted y it at its ninth session. The resolution referred to is resolution 242 (IX) C. In this resolution, the Economic and Social Council considered, inter alia "that a Convention on the nationality of married women, which would assure women equality with men in the exercise of these rights and especially prevent a woman from becoming stateless or otherwise suffering hardships arising out of these conflicts in law, should be prepared as promptly as possible". The Council therefore requested the Secretary-General to prepare and circulate to Member States an analysis of the conflicts in law demonstrated in certain reports previously presented by the Secretary-General to the Commission on the Status of Women and in any further replied received from Governments.
2. The Secretary-General has prepared for the forthcoming session of the Commission on the Status of Women the requested "Analysis of Conflicts of laws in the Field of Nationality of Married Women" (document E/CN.6/126) and he has the honour to circulate this analysis herewith to the Ad Hoc Committee on Statelessness and Related Problems for its information.
