Max Schmidheiny Freedom Prize awarded to UNHCR
High Commissioner Lubbers travelled to St. Gall, Switzerland last Saturday to accept the prestigious Max Schmidheiny Freedom Prize. The prize money, CHF 100,000, will go to support the "Roots and Shoots" environmental and humanitarian education initiative for young people that Dr. Goodall and UNHCR plan to expand to refugee camps to benefit refugee children. Opening up the "Roots and Shoots" programme to refugee children will, we believe, help to give refugees the skills they need to identify appropriate education projects that they can undertake with the support of other "Roots and Shoots" branches world-wide.
