Official UNHCR statement by Head of Delegation (LAS) – Mr. Lance Bartholomeucz

Good afternoon. First and foremost, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is grateful to the Lebanese people and the Government of Lebanon for the support and generosity they have provided and continue to provide to Syrian refugees.
We came yesterday with a delegation of experts from UNHCR headquarters and Regional Bureau for the Middle East and North Africa to hold discussions with the Lebanese Government, including on the issue of information and data sharing.
Building on our longstanding collaboration we have reached an agreement.
This agreement is in accordance with global data protection standards. The Lebanese Government committed not to use any data shared for purposes contrary to international law and reaffirmed its commitment to the principle of non-refoulement and its obligations under international and domestic law.
Further discussion will follow on implementation modalities. UNHCR remains committed to continue strong cooperation with Lebanon as we move forward.
