Field Unit Dogharoun

Field Unit Dogharoun

UNHCR Field Unit Dogharoun (FUD) was established in September 1992, primarily to facilitate the voluntary repatriation of refugees returning to Afghanistan. FUD is part of the larger Field Office Mashhad.

Currently, FUD is the only border exit station for Afghan refugees in Iran.

FUD is located inside the Bureau for Aliens and Foreign Immigrants Affairs (BAFIA) compound at the Iran‐Afghanistan border, where other partners including BAFIA, the Iranian Red Crescent Society’s Mine Risk Education Centre and the Ministry of Health’s health post are stationed.

Given the uncertainties in Afghanistan over the recent years, voluntary repatriation has observed a notable decline. On the other hand, the challenging economic situation in Iran has been an equally encouraging factor for an increasing number of refugees to opt for voluntary repatriation, despite the precarious security situation in Afghanistan.
