In pictures: Another year of record forced displacement

Last year, more people than ever were uprooted from their homes by war, persecution and human rights abuses. According to the UN Refugee Agency’s annual Global Trends report, by the end of 2022 the number of forcibly displaced people was estimated at 108.4 million – up by 19 million from the end of 2021. This represents the largest year-on-year increase since UNHCR began compiling statistics on forced displacement.

Much of the increase was driven by the war in Ukraine. The Russian Federation’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 created the fastest outflow of refugees recorded since World War II. But conflict and insecurity in other parts of the world, including Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Syria and Myanmar, all contributed to the record rise. Meanwhile, the increasing frequency of weather-related disasters linked to climate change, including droughts and flooding, drove further displacement on a scale not seen before.

Less than half of those forced to flee crossed an international border. Of the global total, 58 per cent were displaced within their own countries. Of those that did cross borders, 70 per cent remained in the mostly low-and middle-income countries neighbouring their own.

The relentless upward trajectory in global forced displacement shows no sign of slowing in 2023 with the eruption of a new conflict in Sudan in April, and ongoing violence, political upheaval and climate-fueled crises continuing to force people from their homes in many other parts of the world.

Below is a collection of UNHCR photography from 2022 highlighting 10 of the key themes and crises behind the data in the Global Trends report.

89.3 million people worldwide were forcibly displaced

at the end of 2021 as a result of persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations or events seriously disturbing public order.

UNHCR Annual Global Trends Report

DATA AND STATISTICS

UNHCR annual Global Trends report 2021

UNHCR's Global Trends report presents key statistical trends and the latest numbers of refugees, asylum-seekers, internally displaced and stateless persons.

If ongoing conflicts remain unresolved and the risks of new ones erupting are not reined in, one aspect that will define the twenty-first century will be the continuously growing numbers of people forced to flee and the increasingly dire options available to them.

Why is World Refugee Day important?

World Refugee Day shines a light on the rights, needs and dreams of refugees, helping to mobilize political will and resources so refugees can not only survive but also thrive. While it is important to protect and improve the lives of refugees every single day, international days like World Refugee Day help to focus global attention on the plight of those fleeing conflict or persecution. Many activities held on World Refugee Day create opportunities to support refugees.

UNHCR has more than 18,879 staff, 87 per cent of whom are based in the field, assisting the most vulnerable people uprooted by wars and persecution. Just over seven per cent of staff are based at our Geneva headquarters. Along with the Global Service Centres in Budapest, Copenhagen and Amman, these people provide support for the rest of UNHCR, including key administrative functions.

Staff include drivers, supply officers, protection workers and other professionals in various specialist areas.

What happens on World Refugee Day?

Each year, World Refugee Day is marked by a variety of events in many countries around the globe in support of refugees. These activities are led by or involve refugees themselves, government officials, host communities, companies, celebrities, school children and the general public, among others. Read our World Refugee Day Live Blog to discover some of the activities that took place in 2022.
