Earthquake tragedy in Turkey

The High Commissioner has conveyed to Turkish Prime Minister Bulen Ecevit her deep shock and sadness at the news of the terrible loss of life in the earthquake in Turkey, and expressed UNHCR's condolences to the people of Turkey. As a sign of solidarity in the face of the disaster, and as a contribution to the relief effort, UNHCR has donated tents, plastic sheeting and blankets from its stocks in the region to the Turkish authorities. These items have been dispatched to Adapazari town, in the heart of the disaster area, where the Turkish government is co-ordinating the relief efforts. The supplies are expected to arrive there today.
