Thanks to Hong Kong donors who supported DAFI – UNHCR’s Refugee Scholarship programme – a total of 24 refugees are able to attend university and pursue their dreams!

Only two years old when her family fled their country to settle in Zambia, Francesca was forced to give up school after graduating from high school in 2008. Now working for an AIDS programme supported by USAID after entering university to study pharmacy in 2016, she credits DAFI for having changed her life. “DAFI gave me the will to keep going. It had to count for something” she says.

The largest and longest running higher education refugee scholarship in the world, it has already helped nearly 7,000 refugee scholars complete their education, get jobs and transform the community they live in.

About UNHCR

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was established on 14 December 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. The agency is mandated to lead and coordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee issues. It strives to ensure that everyone has the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another state, with the option to voluntarily return home when conditions are conducive for return, integrate locally or resettle to a third country. UNHCR has twice won the Nobel Peace Prize, in 1954 for its ground-breaking work in helping the refugees of Europe, and in 1981 for its worldwide assistance to refugees.
