8 October 2024, Cairo, Egypt – UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Immigration and Egyptians Abroad (MFA) in collaboration with the International Institute of Humanitarian Law in Sanremo, Italy concluded a three-day Asylum Management workshop in Cairo, Egypt on 3 October.
UNHCR and MFA have embarked on a series of joint capacity development programmes to support the development of a domestic asylum framework and to strengthen collaboration among key actors involved in refugee protection in Egypt. The Asylum Management Workshop aims to directly support this commitment by enhancing the technical expertise of key national actors involved in the areas of asylum management, refugee reception, registration, status determination and protection.
The workshop was co-launched and inaugurated by Dr. Hanan Hamdan, UNHCR Egypt Representative, Ambassador Dr. Wael Badawi Deputy Assistant Foreign Minister for Migration, Refugee Affairs and Anti Human Trafficking -Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates and Mr. Claudio Delfabro, Director, Department of International Refugee Law and Migration Law – International Institute of Humanitarian Law, Sanremo, Italy.
During the workshop, Dr. Hanan Hamdan emphasized the value of the collaborative partnership between MFA and UNHCR while also praising Egypt’s pivotal role as a host country and a key player in the region.
“Egypt has long been a hospitable and generous host country, offering refugees and asylum seekers access to basic services at equal footing with Egyptians. At a time where multiple crises are unfolding in neighbouring countries, the Government of Egypt has been demonstrably committed to advancing international standards of refugee protection” said Dr. Hamdan.
Ambassador Dr. Wael Badawi highlighted the strong partnership between the Government of Egypt and UNHCR and the broad range of cooperation between them at a time during which the development of a domestic framework for refugees within Egyptian law remains under study. He also praised the workshop, stating, “It was a significant contribution to strengthen Egypt’s commitment to the international standards of refugee protection.”
This training is made possible thanks to the generous support of the European Union and the Italian Government through the Regional Development and Protection Programme for North Africa (RDPP NA) –and reflects the Government of Egypt’s (GoE) ongoing commitment to strengthen the standards of refugee protection.
