UNHCR's partnership with humanitarian associations in Qatar dates back to the 1990s. This partnership has expanded over the years, especially over the past decade, to respond to various and increasing forced displacement situations around the world, including with the Government and leadership of the State of Qatar, humanitarian and development organizations, the private sector, and the Qatari people.
The growing partnership between the two sides culminated in the agreement to open UNHCR's office in Doha in March 2023, when the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, and the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar, His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani inaugurated the United Nations House in Qatar, which hosts the offices of several United Nations agencies operating in the State of Qatar, including UNHCR, as a generous contribution from the Government of the State of Qatar.
Over the past decade, Qatar's contributions to UNHCR's programmes have reached over US$ 382 million (approximately QR 1.4 billion) - to support refugees, internally displaced people, and host communities in different sectors such as education, shelter, health, livelihoods and cash assistance, a lifeline for millions of people around the world.
