World Refugee Day 2002: Cyprus

World Refugee Day 2002: Cyprus

20 June 2002

Kids play in a neighbourhood populated mostly by Iraqi refugees. Because refugees are not allowed to work in Syria, children often must take informal jobs to help support their families.

In co-operation with the Ministry of Education and Culture, UNHCR organised a drawing competition with the theme "Refugee Children: one day, they had to flee their home ... " for 8- to 12-year-old children.

UNHCR staff visited schools to hold information sessions. Relevant materials were provided to the schools.

The selection committee was composed of Mr. Andreas Ladomatos (artist), Ms. Kety Clerides (politician and member of the Group of Volunteers for the Support of Refugees and Asylum-seekers), Ms. Persefoni Andreou (journalist), Ms. Yianna Theoharus-Ganzidou (art inspector), Mr. Constandinos Stephanou (art teacher), and UNHCR. Out of the 400 drawings received, some 100 were selected for the exhibition, which started on 20 June at Kastelliotissa, an ancient hall in Nicosia.
