Turkmenistan

Turkmenistan hosts over 4,300 known stateless persons, mostly ex-citizens of the former Soviet Union who have not yet acquired or confirmed the citizenship of successor states. In 2021, the country resolved 2,700 cases of statelessness. Turkmenistan is the only Central Asia country that has already become a party to both Statelessness Conventions.

At the end of 2021, Turkmenistan hosted 17 refugees recognized by UNHCR according to its mandate. There are no reports of asylum-seekers arriving in Turkmenistan since it introduced a national asylum system in 2005.

UNHCR interventions in Turkmenistan are carried out by two civil society partners, with oversight, funding, and strategic directions provided by the Kazakhstan Multi-Country Office.
