Media Advisory on Displacement figures on the Sudan situation

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, continues to monitor movements of people forced to flee deadly conflict in Sudan.

Context

Three months since deadly conflict broke out in Sudan, more than three million people have been displaced both within the country and across borders into neighboring countries seeking safety. According to data collected and compiled by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, over 732,823 refugees have fled into Chad, Egypt, South Sudan, Ethiopia and the Central African Republic (CAR), as of 16 July 2023. Half of the new arrivals are women and children.

260,390 refugees have fled to Chad while 255,565 refugees and asylum seekers have arrived in Egypt. In South Sudan, 174,340 refugees have arrived in the country, 91 per cent of them being South Sudanese refugees who have returned to their country of origin. Some 25,540 refugees have also arrived in Ethiopia and another 16,988 refugees and returnees in CAR.

UNHCR continues to monitor movements of people forced to flee Sudan and provide lifesaving assistance and protection wherever we can.
