Educate a child
About the partnership
Since: 2012
Locations: Chad, Ethiopia, Iran, Kenya, Malaysia, Pakistan, Rwanda, Uganda, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria and Yemen
Since 2012, Educate A Child has been a vital long-term supporter of UNHCR’s work to extend quality primary education to refugee children around the world.
More than half of the world’s 25.4 million refugees are under the age of 18. Today, there are 4 million refugee children out of school.
At primary school level globally, 91 per cent of children attend primary school. However, for refugees, that figure is far lower, at only 63 per cent, and in low income countries it is less than 50 per cent.
UNHCR’s partnership with Educate A Child helped over 1.2 million out of school refugee and internally displaced children gain access to primary school, and reduced the risk of dropping out among children.
The partnership with EAC helps UNHCR and its partners improve the quality of teaching and learning, ensure safe learning environments for children, promote awareness and advocacy on the importance of education, and strengthen capacity and partnerships with ministries of education and others to enable more refugee children to attend school.
