LESSON 3: Separation
Preparation
Advanced reading by the teacher of the information sheet, Separation. [PDF]
Procedure
Allow the students a few minutes to discuss their homework assignment which was to make up a list of the types of help that they would need if they became refugees.
Answers would include the provision of shelter, medical aid, education, a means to earn a livelihood, protection from harm, and protection from being sent back to the home country while there is still danger in that country.
Focus the students' attention onto the turmoil of conflict and flight when family members are often separated from each other. Using the information provided in the information sheet, Separation [PDF], guide the students into a discussion about the difficulties and dangers that refugee teenagers have to face when separated from their primary caregivers.
Ask the students to refer to the refugee teenager stories from the previous lesson, and to identify the refugee teenagers who suffered separation from their families. How did the refugee teenagers cope?
Homework question:
List the type of difficulties and dangers that refugee teenagers have to face when separated from their primary caregivers.
