She has now received Thai nationality and an ID card. This Thai New Year, Ms. Aey can freely visit her relatives without worry.
Your generosity and support today help us end statelessness in Thailand. We need your help to ensure that everyone is able to get nationality.
UNHCR staff and partner organizations in Chiang Rai Province providing assistance in document preparation for stateless persons at Mae Suai District Office. Families are lining up to submit their documents to district officials under the close supervision of our officials. “Today, my children and I have hope.” UNHCR is grateful to the donors who have helped support the cost of document preparation and travel expenses. Many children told us: “I want a National ID card like my friends.”
“The first day I got my ID card, I hugged it like this. I was really happy.”
We understood more about the meaning of happiness when we first stepped foot into Ms. Aey’s house. Ms. Aey greeted us with a big smile and sent her sincere appreciation and thanks for helping her obtain an ID card for the very first time on her 72nd birthday.
Ms. Aey is a Thai person who became excluded from the population registry due to a change of residence. She heard that UNHCR was helping stateless persons to obtain DNA testing to apply for Thai citizenship. She contacted UNHCR and has had hope since then.
Ms. Aey would like to thank the donors who supported the project to help stateless persons, including the cost of the DNA test. She told us that for other people, 5,000 baht for a DNA test may not seem much, but for her, it was considerably more money than she could earn. Thank you for helping to change Ms. Aey’s life forever.
Your continued support can make a difference and provide basic human rights and a better future for stateless persons. Please donate today.
