The number of people forced to flee conflict, violence, and persecution has crossed the milestone of 100 million for the first time on record. In 2021 alone, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, declared 40 new emergencies in 29 countries. In addition, ongoing crises, silent emergencies, and the climate crisis have driven continued displacements in the last decade. From UNHCR data, every year, refugees around the world travel 2 billion kilometres in search for their safety.
“UNHCR recognizes the potential of sport as a tool for protection and personal development, particularly for refugee children and youth globally. We welcome partnership with MICE & Communication and TCEB in connecting the experience of runners with those who were forced to flee and showing solidary in running for refugees,” said Nivene Albert, UNHCR Deputy Representative in Thailand.
MICE & Communication Co., Ltd. and Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) will raise awareness about the refugee plights through series of Thailand’s first and only Elite Label marathon race – Bangsaen 42, and Bangsaen Run 21 and 10 that will begin on Sunday 30 October 2022 at Bangsaen Heritage Hotel.
“Organizing sports events are promoting good health and we are delighted to see more Thais recognize the positive influence in these areas. Apart from our acclaimed international standard event, we are proud that the series of Bangsaen Run will also create wider awareness for displacement people and support humanitarian assistance enabling UNHCR to make a difference in the lives of refugee children and women around the world,” Rut Jiroajvanichakorn. Managing Director at MICE & Communication Co., Ltd.
“Thailand is not only the world’s leading MICE destination, a new chapter of Thailand also aims to redefine business events, accelerate sustainable growth and event development to align with international interests. We look forward to extending this partnership with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, to share global responsibility supporting the largest numbers of displaced people and shape Thailand for global citizenship.” Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya, President, Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (Public Organization) or TCEB
