Senior Protection Associate G-7 (Bratislava, Slovakia)

The UNHCR Representation for Central Europe covers 5 countries, namely the Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Slovakia, Slovenia (and Belarus from 2022). The Representation is based in Budapest, Hungary and The Senior Protection Associate as the member of the Protection Unit of the Representation will report to the Legal Officer or Senior Protection Officer.

To fulfill his/her functions, the Senior Protection Associate will need to have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of Slovakia and the Slovak society and an excellent knowledge of international refugee and statelessness law. This also includes a good understanding of the legislative and policy framework and institutions as well as of asylum matters and statelessness in Slovakia . The incumbent is expected to monitor the protection environment in Slovakia in line with international standards and to coordinate quality, timely and effective protection response. The incumbent will need to have an in-depth understanding of the UNHCR¿s persons of concern in and maintain and build working relationships with the communities, local authorities and protection and assistance partners. He/she will contribute to designing of the comprehensive protection strategy and will represent the office externally on protection doctrine and policy.

To fulfill his/her functions, the Senior Protection Associate will also need to have an excellent knowledge of community-based protection approaches and durable solutions available in Slovakia with a focus on integration strategy. This includes a good understanding of community engagement and outreach, child protection, gender-based violence (GBV), Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) mainstreaming, as well as the Common European Asylum System and related national legislation.

He/She will need to have excellent knowledge English as well as drafting skills. Fluency in the Slovakian language is required. The ideal candidate should have relevant work experience in refugee law.

He/She is required be a dynamic team-player with a proactive approach to work and a keen interest in refugee protection.
