After being forced to flee her home, Kathia found safety in Serbia where she was granted refugee status. Though the journey was not easy, she embraced the challenges of building a new life, determined to turn uncertainty into opportunity. Today, Kathia is a shining example of successful integration, demonstrating how refugees, when given the chance, can thrive and contribute to their new communities.
Over the past few days, Kathia took over UNHCR Serbia’s social media channels, sharing insights into her daily life, her journey, and her dreams. Through a series of short videos, she shared a glimpse into her routine, her passions and the small moments that shape her new beginning.
One of Kathia’s first challenges was learning the Serbian language. Initially, she feared that language barriers might stand in the way of her new life. However, with dedication and perseverance, she mastered Serbian aside from being fluent in multiple languages, including French, English and her native Kirundi. Her ability to communicate across cultures has allowed her to connect with people, bridge gaps, and support others in similar situations.
Education has played a crucial role in Kathia’s integration. She is now a university student in Belgrade, pursuing her studies with a clear goal and direction. For Kathia, having access to education means more than acquiring knowledge—it is a step toward building a future in which she can give back to the society that welcomed her.
Beyond academics, Kathia has embraced everyday life in Serbia. From her favorite music and books to her humorous experiences navigating a new city—including an unforgettable three-hour bus ride to the wrong destination—she has woven herself into the fabric of the local community. Her story is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of refugees when provided with support and opportunities.
Kathia firmly believes that every person forced to flee deserves a place where they can rebuild their lives in safety and dignity.
“Everyone has the right to a home, security and shelter. Everyone deserves hope—even away from home,” she says.
