Yesterday, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in Serbia opened a photo exhibition at the Europe House in Belgrade, marking the conclusion of the ten-year UNHCR campaign to end statelessness. “I Belong.” The exhibition was opened by Jelena Žarić Kovačević, Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government, Plamena Halacheva, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation in Serbia, Soufiane Adjali, UNHCR Representative in Serbia, Nemanja Pančić, photographer and author of the exhibit, and a member of the community who obtained personal documents during the campaign.
The aim of the exhibition is to shed light on the challenges faced by people who live without personal documents and are at risk of statelessness.
Launched in 2014, the “I Belong” campaign set a goal to address statelessness globally. Serbia has made significant strides in this regard, with thousands of people receiving personal documents, granting them access to essential rights, including education, healthcare, and employment. Through legislative reform and the combined efforts of state institutions, international organizations, and the non-governmental sector, Serbia has progressed in tackling this issue and can serve as an example of good practice. Despite evident progress and results, all stakeholders will continue working on resolving this problem as long as there are people at risk of statelessness in Serbia.
The “I Belong” exhibition showcases portraits and quotes from people who have yet to receive personal documents, as well as those who have resolved this issue. Each photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of legal visibility for everyone and what obtaining personal documents means for their lives and future.
Visitors to the Europe House can see the “I Belong” exhibition until 12 November.
