UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency in Serbia and the Commissariat for Refugees and Migration of the Republic of Serbia signed today a Letter of Understanding on strengthening cooperation and coordination of activities related to asylum seekers and refugees.
The Letter of Understanding aims to formalize the long-standing collaboration of the two organizations and further strengthen various aspects of their joint work: improvement of the reception conditions in the asylum centres, the implementation of international and national standards related to integration and self-reliance of persons granted international protection, identification of additional opportunities for integration of refugees and asylum-seekers in Serbia, joint advocacy for most vulnerable IDPs.
Nataša Stanisavljević, Commissioner for Refugees and Migration of the Republic of Serbia, said “The event today is very important for all of us as we have pooled efforts to improve the living conditions of the most vulnerable persons. Our joint objective is to support related to the establishment of conditions for the reception of asylum-seekers, their early inclusion, integration of persons granted international protection, as well as advocacy for solutions for the most vulnerable internally displaced persons – those who were forced to leave their countries and whose lives are starting over in Serbia. They deserve the support of the entire society. The Commissariat for Refugees and Migration is committed to resolving problems. UNHCR is a reliable and responsible partner in all these processes and in assisting the mentioned categories of persons. Therefore, the Letter of Understanding we are signing today represents a significant step in the continuation of our cooperation and provision of adequate response to the challenges we are facing, with a view to advancing human rights, in particular the protection of vulnerable categories such as refugees and asylum-seekers.
“UNHCR in Serbia believes that this Letter of Understanding will further strengthen the existing good relations that we enjoy with the Serbian Commissariat for Refugees and Migration since its establishment in 1992. It will further enhance various aspects of our joint work on protection and integration of asylum seekers and refugees“ said Soufiane Adjali, UNHCR Representative in Serbia.
