The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have signed a pivotal Letter of Understanding solidifying their commitment to collaborative action in support of refugees, asylum seekers, and children at risk of statelessness.
The agreement, aligned with the global 2023 Strategic Collaboration Framework, emphasizes the shared history of effective cooperation between UNHCR and UNICEF. The collaboration aims to maximize technical and management capacities, resources, and response capabilities in the Republic of Serbia.
Deyana Kostadinova, UNICEF Representative in Serbia, and Soufiane Adjali, UNHCR Representative in Serbia, expressed their dedication to this partnership.
“This year UNHCR-UNICEF globally adopted a joint Strategic Collaboration Framework to support and promote the inclusion of refugees in national systems. Based on it, the two UN agencies’ country offices in Serbia are the first ones in the region to officially join efforts to implement it by signing a Letter of Understanding today. This is very timely, bearing in mind the ongoing wars in the world, and broader instabilities and crisis. We remain committed to working for and with children who are displaced and their families”, stated Deyana Kostadinova.
“This Letter of Understanding marks a milestone in our joint efforts to ensure the well-being and protection of refugee children, unaccompanied refugee and asylum-seeking children in particular, in Serbia. By working together, we can enhance the impact of our interventions and contribute to the objectives of the Global Compact on Refugees,” believes Soufiane Adjali.
The Letter of Understanding signed by UNICEF and UNHCR in Serbia emphasizes the role of the Government of the Republic of Serbia in leading the protection and assistance response for refugees, with support from UNHCR, and recognizing UNICEF’s mandate to uphold the rights of every child globally.
