As of today, the UN Refugee Agency has provided one million Euro worth of support to the refugee response of the Government of Serbia.
Since early June, refugees are receiving food, water, personal hygiene items supplied by UNHCR and handed out by the Red Cross of Serbia and other partners. All medicines and medical supplies for the refugees were funded by UNHCR and distributed through the Danish Refugee Council throughout Serbia.
UNHCR also helped the Serbian authorities, including the Commissariat for Refugees and Migration, with many computers, other technical equipment, furniture and aid items to establish and enhance the capacities of the One-Stop Centre in Presevo. Only yesterday additional registration equipment was donated to the Ministry of Interior.
The total value of UNHCR assistance, already delivered, has now reached 1 million Euro. UNHCR is mobilizing another 5 million Euro to further help the Government of Serbia managing the refugee situation humanely.
The cooperation between the Serbian authorities, UNHCR, other UN agencies and partners remains fast and efficient. When a sudden influx of refugees from Macedonia reached Serbia on 22-23 August, upon request of the Government, the Agency immediately dispatched additional bottled water, canned food, high-energy biscuits, hygiene and medical supplies.
A network of governmental and non-governmental partners of UNHCR continues to monitor the situation throughout the country, promptly addressing protection and humanitarian needs of refugees as they arise.
As refugees continue arriving at a rate of around 3,000 persons per day, UNHCR is trucking-in additional emergency stocks to supplement the aid procured in Serbia. As there are more and more children and other vulnerable persons amongst the refugees and autumn is approaching, the composition of aid is adapted to include baby supplies, blankets and other winter items.
UNHCR opened its office in Belgrade in 1976. Since 1992 the UN Refugee Agency has assisted Serbia’s protection and integration of refugees, other displaced and stateless people with over 500 million Euros.
