UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency and Qatar Charity (QC) have signed a QAR 2,555,089 agreement to support vulnerable Syrian refugee families in Lebanon during Eid Al-Fitr.
With this contribution, UNHCR will provide cash assistance to 13,146 Syrian refugee families (approx. 65,730 individuals) to cover the cost of food and other essential living expenses, such as rent, debt repayment, medical care, clothing, and school fees.
UNHCR’s Representative to the state of Qatar, Ayat El-Dewary, lauded Qatar Charity’s humanitarian engagement and welcomed this contribution by stating: “We are extremely grateful for Qatar Charity’s timely contribution during Eid Al-Fitr to support UNHCR’s humanitarian efforts in Lebanon.” She added: “With this generous contribution, we hope to provide Syrian refugees with some relief from the increasing pressures they face, through the much-needed cash assistance to cover their most urgent needs as well as adding an element of joy as they celebrate Eid.”
On his part, Nawaf Abdulla Al-Hammadi, Chief Global Programs Officer at Qatar Charity reiterated QC’s humanitarian commitment to supporting forcibly displaced persons through UNHCR, and stated: “With this contribution, we hope to ease some of the burdens posed on vulnerable refugee families in a dignified manner through cash assistance, thus allowing them to prioritize their expenses and cover their most pressing needs during Eid Al-Fitr.”
11 years into the Syrian crisis, Lebanon remains one of the countries with the largest number of refugees per capita in the world, hosting over 830,000 Syrian refugees. Amidst the country’s financial crisis and hyperinflation compounded with the devastating socio-economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, refugees and host communities have been faced with an exponential rise in extreme poverty, due to limited livelihood opportunities, as well as a surge in food prices.
