About the partnership
Since: 2012
Locations: Cameroon, Chad, Iraq, Kenya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Pakistan, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Uganda, and Yemen.
Since 2012, Educate A Child (EAC) has been a vital long-term supporter of UNHCR’s work to extend access to quality primary education to refugee and other displaced children around the world.
Children represent 42 per cent of all forcibly displaced people, but UNHCR estimates that close to half of these remain out of school. The impact of COVID-19 has exacerbated the difficulties refugees and other forcibly displaced persons have in accessing education.
At primary school level globally, it is estimated that only 68 per cent of refugee children attend primary school. Although figures differ from country to country, refugees attend school at a much lower rate than their host community counterparts.
To date, UNHCR’s partnership with EAC has helped over 1.3 million out of school refugee and internally displaced children gain access to primary school and reduced the risk of them dropping out of school early.
The partnership with EAC not only helps UNHCR improve access to education through enrolment and retention of students, it also targets the quality of teaching and learning, ensure safe learning environments for children, promote awareness and advocacy on the importance of education, and strengthen capacity and partnerships with ministries of education and others to enable more refugee children to attend school. In addition, since 2019, we have introduced a Sport for Protection Initiative in four pilot EAC implementing countries.
Impact at a glance
Only 68% of refugee children have access to primary school and these children are often the most marginalized and hardest to reach.
Thanks to the partnership between UNHCR and Educate A Child, over 1.3 million out of school refugee and other displaced children have been enrolled in primary education since 2012.
